Dracaena Janet Craig

Dracaena deremensis Janet Craig Compacta has cane like stems with drak green foliage.

These plants need bright indirect consistent light throughout the day. They will do ok with artificial light provided it is bright fluorescent and always on during the day.

Like all house plants they do not like to be moved around. Pick your spot with care, keeping clear of drafts A/C and heating vents and allow it to get acclimated to its new home. Rotating the planter 1/4 turn every few weeks to allow even growth on all sides.

Depending on where the plant is placed it may dry out quicker and require more frequent watering, if in doubt it is better to underwater than overwater. The humidity in the room and the time of year in addition to the AC/ Heating are all factors that vary from home to home and affect individual plant's watering needs.

Start by watering once a week approx 1 and half cups of water around the circumference of the planter evenly. Insert finger into the soil approx two inches down and feel the moisture level. If it feels moist a week after watering wait a few days and check again. Once the soil feels slightly dry water again. These plants do not like soggy soil.

Questions on problems with Dracaena

Tips or edges of leaves turning brown? This is caused generally by one of three things. Your plants is in a drafty location (ie too close to an air vent/ door) or you have overwatered  of there is a buildup of salts and chlorine from the tap water. If possible use distilled or filtered water.

Entire leaf is turning yellow or brown- this is usually a sign your plant has been left too long between watering. Slowly increase the amount of water or frequency of watering.

Dropping leaves.

If the leaves are dropping form the bottom over a period of time this is normal as the leaves drop energy is channeled to new growth at the top. If many leaves drop from the top of the plant it can be the environment. Ie AC is blowing hot/ cold air on it or it is getting burned by the sun or there is a sudden temperature change. Your plant is not happy where it is.

Yellow Spots

If the leaves have yellow spots this can be due to fungal disorder caused by root rot from overwatering or can be from insects feeding on the leaves. Check for mites and mealybugs and spray with insecticidal soap.
